The Parish Churches of

St Michael & St Wulfad, Stone, with

St Saviour Aston by Stone

“For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands” -  Advice from St Paul to his young assistant, Timothy in his second letter in the New Testament. Last Sunday we saw one of the successor Apostles, Bishop Geoff come to Confirm five people, four from our benefice and to do much the same thing – lay on his hands and invoke the Holy Spirit

And St Paul reminds us, of course, that this isn’t the end of the story – rather just the beginning: That gift of the Spirit needs to be encouraged, developed and fed daily! Just as new born infants need regular care and sustenance, so these candidates will need our prayers, our encouragement and a really good diet of Word and Sacrament to nurture them along the way. No-one could seriously think otherwise!

And what does Confirmation do? It invites the Holy Spirit to begin a great work within us. It asks the Lord to shape our lives into something that they ought to be. Our Politicians have been pontificating in the Conferences on the kind of country they believe they can make Britain – but here we see the work of God as slowly, carefully, delicately the Master Carpenter of Nazareth frees us from our bonds and shapes us into the thing of beauty we can become

All of which chimes in so well with the Harvest: for we are the true Harvest of God. In our lives he plants the seed of the fruit of the Spirit – love, joy, peace etc. – qualities that spring from within, and are not dependent on the changes and chances of this fleeting world.

So thank you to everyone that supported Ashleigh, Louise, Helen and Peter (not forgetting Phoebe from Churnet valley) last Sunday. Now we must pray for them – and for the gift of the Spirit to be fanned into flame in all our lives!
