St Saviour Aston by Stone

This week see a change of gear in the lectionary readings: Thursday is Candlemas day – or, to give it its alternative titles, the Purification of the Virgin Mary, or the Presentation of Christ in the temple. Whatever the name, the day marks the 40th day after Christmas:- a very significant number, just as Ascension day comes 40 days after Easter!

Why significant? Jesus is presented on the 40th day, in accordance with the Law of Moses; in this way he both fulfils and yet transcends the Law, making it come to life. For the new Temple, rebuilt after the time of Exile and then further renewed under King Herod had always had a curious emptiness about it. In coming into the Temple the child fulfils the prophet Malachi and God’s promise that his presence would indeed return there

“To be a light to enlighten the Gentiles and to be the glory of thy people Israel!” runs the Nunc Dimmittis, the Song of Simeon. The Eucharist that day historically involves the blessing of candles, then spread abroad among the Congregation, as a living symbol of the Light of Christ abroad in the hearts of his people. Jesus, whilst claiming to be the light of the World himself, also calls his followers by the same title. We are to spread abroad the Light of Christ: he who has come to be the Light that no darkness can overcome. Candlemas day is an important reminder of these things

“May the Light of Christ, rising in glory, banish all darkness from our hearts and minds”

Having seen tyre tracks round the back of St M&W recently, can I remind you all that there is a soakaway drain there that can make the ground very boggy and we are advised not to drive there!
