A Jewish Rabbi once told me of the reaction of a woman visiting his synagogue and flicking through a prayer book – “Oh look, they’re using our psalms!” Perhaps today there are Anglicans having the same psychological reaction in reverse: how can we be honouring Mary when she’s Roman Catholic?

Of course she is no such thing, but a faithful Jewish maiden. The Archangel greets her as “most highly favoured” and it would be stupid for us to do anything less! The truth about Mary is expressed by our Orthodox brothers and sisters when they acclaim her as “the first of the redeemed.” There is much evidence that Christian people from New Testament times honoured Mary as a great and significant person in the story of our Salvation – and they even called her “Theotokos” – the God-bearer

And so today we once more hear the wondrous story of how the Angel tells Mary of how she is to bear the Messiah. Perhaps Mary is best viewed as an example of what may happen when God’s purposes meet human faithfulness. In Mary’s “Yes” we see a foretaste of what may happen when we agree to God’s plans for our lives! It may not make it easy, but is certainly does make life exciting.
