In todays’ Gospel, Jesus tells a parable about a dishonest steward who is commended for his prudence.

A steward is dismissed because he is squandering his master's property. He is called dishonest because he is not serving the interests of the rich man, his employer. Trying to curry favour for himself among the rich mans debtors, he brokers repayment of the rich mans’ loans by foregoing the interest and fees that had been levied to line the servants pockets. It is this action, in which the steward puts aside his greed and takes the longer perspective in order to enhance his security, which is commended by the rich man.

The passage concludes with 3 morals, first that the listeners should be prudent about the use of wealth. Secondly, trustworthiness. Those who can be trusted in small things can be trusted with great things. Finally, Jesus tells his listeners that no-one can serve two masters simultaneously.

This week we face a real challenge. How do we respond to the call to “renounce” all we have so that we can be a disciple of Jesus? Someone once pointed out that you and I may be the only Bible some people ever read. Do we truly mirror the Lord in every aspect of our daily lives? Is the joy of the Lord our strength? What have you had to deny, or put aside in order to follow Jesus? Was it worth the cost? What have you depended on in the past that you left behind to follow Jesus? Wealth? Fame? Relationships? Leisure time? Remember, there is no such thing as cheap grace. Everything comes at a cost. We are promised a cross when we sign on to follow the Lord. Authentic discipleship requires radical commitment. What will it cost you this week? What is the cross you bear? Pay the price, carry the weight, and anticipate the joy that will be yours when you hear from Jesus, “well done, good and faithful servant.”
