So this week sees our two parishes celebrating Confirmation. This is a most ancient service, with roots right back into Biblical times – Jesus said to Nicodemus that to be one of his folk entailed being born again of Water and the Spirit. Many, though not all, of us will not remember our baptism, as we were infants, brought into the New Covenant by the promises of parents and Godparents. But whereas that promise was important, it is nothing like as important as the promise that God makes to us in the ancient rite of Confirmation

So the Bishop of Stafford will be with us, on Sunday and Monday; he will lay his hands on the candidates at both occasions and pray for the gift of the Holy Spirit upon them. After that he will anoint them with oil and seal them with that “outward and visible sign of inward and invisible grace.” All of us that are present will be blessed in remembering our own profession of faith and will celebrate the wonderful sacrament of the Eucharist together. What a privilege for us all!

One of the things of which we shall be reminded is that it is never too late! Since coming to Stone, we have seen 90+ year olds being confirmed, both at Summerfield Court and the former Manor House Nursing Home! On that occasion, a former Bishop of Stafford spoke words that are almost prophetic:- “for the Christian, the best is always yet to be!” They have stayed with me over the years and they continue to ring true. God always has plans for us, whether we are 90 or 9 weeks

So do pray for the candidates – two at Summerfield Court and two in Church. What shall we see from the seeds that are being sown is part of the wonder of God at work. Do come and support us in the special moments

Ian Cardinal

From its holy dusters and flower arrangers to its tea mashers and tour guides - the 400-strong team of volunteers at Lichfield Cathedral have been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

It is the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK to recognise outstanding work in their communities, and is the equivalent of an individual MBE. On behalf of Lichfield Cathedral’s volunteers, Kath Toothill and Pete Harris joined fellow recipients of this year’s award at a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May.

The Dean of Lichfield, the Very Revd Adrian Dorber said: “Our volunteers are the lifeblood of our cathedral and it is wonderful for them to be recognised in this way.

"They are an extraordinary group of individuals who give of their time and talents generously. Without them and their tireless support, our mission, our ministry and our hospitality would be so much less.

“I am proud as punch for them all."

There will be a Thanksgiving Service in Lichfield Cathedral for all its volunteers on 23 June followed by a garden party and a presentation of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service by the Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire, Ian Dudson CBE KStJ.

A certificate signed by the Queen will be received at a later date.
