Alleluia, Christ is risen!

He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

And so it’s Easter – and what a Lent and Passiontide we have had. I was much encouraged by the response to our shared Morning and Evening Prayer at both churches this year:- having not been able to do it last year, this year there were sometimes as many as 8 of us getting to our churches in order to start and end the day in this way. The journey of prayer and saying the Daily Office this way has been really quite inspirational – and I would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who has made the effort to share with us in this way. I hope you have found it as good as I have

Then, of course, we have had our series of speakers in Lent Holy Communion. Again the attendance has been extremely good and much better than last year (I don’t think the “Beast from the East” helped us in 2018!) I will happily confess that this was rather thrown together this year, as there were so many other things on my mind earlier in 2019. But again the reaction has been most positive, with almost all of us saying how helpful it was to hear the Christian journey of those we know on their calling to their various ministries. To my gratification I was also told that Bishop Michael and the Ministry department are thinking of taking up the idea for other parishes, as he leads us in our direction of travel in Discipleship, Vocation and Evangelism. Stone with Aston leads the way!

The biggest question will be “What is next?” of course – and I hope our Ministry Team will be able to meet and decide what kind of thing will help us most in our own journey of faith very soon. But in the meantime, I simply want to remind you that Easter is always a beginning and not an end in itself. Christ is raised – but he calls us all, ever onwards, to better and brighter things; the best is yet to be!

PASCHAL BREAKFASTEaster begins at 6am for us! For those brave enough, there is the reward of a light breakfast in St Michael’s Hall, after the Easter mysteries. If you would like to break your fast like this, there is a list to sign!

Said Judas to Mary, "Now what will you do

with your ointment so rich and rare?"

"I'll pour it all over the feet of the Lord,

and I'll wipe it away with my hair," she said,

"I'll wipe it away with my hair."  Sydney Carter

For those of us that can remember the 60s and 70s , a famous modern hymn, of course. But it refers to this week’s gospel, where Mary does exactly this to Jesus, famously recorded in slightly different forms in each of the gospel stories

Judas is famously embarrassed by Mary’s action: nice women just didn’t do this sort of thing in Palestine – and a real Rabbi would never have permitted his dignity to have been so compromised, he reasons. Perhaps we are sympathetic? Having been to some flesh creepingly awful acts of worship in my time, I can’t say it doesn’t include me! But each of us needs to remember that Jesus commends Mary. Her extravagant heart has realised what she owes to the Lord of Life.

So this week we are confronted with an extravagant God – one who spends everything he has for love of you and me. That is the meaning of Passiontide – an extravagant God who will not allow anything to get in the way of our coming home to him
