LADIES GROUPPut Thursday 14th March 2019 into your diaries – further details to come!
PETER HARVEY’S FUNERALPeter and Dianne have been long standing stalwarts of St M&W of course and are well known to many folks in our church family. His funeral will be on Monday 7th January at 10.30am. Our love and prayers are with Roger, Paul and their families of course
We often use an expression among our English idioms:- when we are hard pressed or pushed to the limit, we are likely to say to someone that we can’t do that because “I’m only human!”
Just suppose that’s only true as far as it goes. Underlying that expression is the assumption that humans are limited, incapable are ultimately unable to accomplish all that we would like to do or be – but let’s think about what being human is really meant to be. Because Christmas gives us a new challenge – instead of being the old limited human, we see humanity as it is meant to be in the Lord Jesus. Far from being incapable, now humans are made into something new. We may not yet be all that we can be – but in Christ there is a new Creation. God has become Man in Christ in order that, in Christ, Humans can become divine
We are used to reading Genesis 3 at our Carol services – how Adam and Eve become so much less than they should have been through disobeying God. The Christmas message is that this curse has been reversed.

DEFIBRILATOR TRAINING. For the last 4 years St Michael & St Wulfad’s has had a defibrillator, kindly donated by a member of the congregation. Although initial training was given, it is felt that some do not know how to use it. Members of all our congregations are invited to training on Saturday 12th January from 10am in St Michael’s Community hall
CHRISTMAS CARDSt M&W has a large card for us to sign to eachother and donate money to a good cause, once again. This year’s cause is the Hospice at Home
If you think this pewsheet looks different from normal, you are correct. In the midst of preparing for things, my computer suffered a catastrophic breakdown on Wednesday afternoon. All my files, emails etc have gone, and I hadn’t backed them up sufficiently recently. Needless to say a new machine is having to be purchased!
Of course, the Scout motto was “Be prepared” – and I wasn’t! And John the Baptist would reprimand me thoroughly. His great call was to be prepared for God’s moment when it came – a far more important matter than losing work on the computer.
So – are you ready for God’s Kingdom? Are your lives prepared? That day is surely coming for us all, when the things of this world will be small in comparison to what really matters. John calls us all to be aware that the Kingdom begins here and now

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!Can you help? Due to losing a couple of members from the rota, we are in need of some volunteers for the coffee rota. It would be a shame if we had to go back to once a fortnight like we used to do. The more volunteers we have, the less frequently you will need to do it. We are also looking for Sides people. If you can help with either of these roles please speak to Nichola. Thank you.
A VERY BIG THANK YOUto everyone who worked towards, attended or simply spent money at both Aston Christmas Fair and the Christmas Tree festival over the last two weekends. Both events were extremely successful and it was a great pleasure to see so many people supporting each other’s churches. Well done everyone!
AND ANOTHER BIG THANK YOUto everyone who read for the New Testament leg of the Bible Readathon in this last week. The final chapters of Revelation just crept over into Wednesday morning! Again, so many thanks to Dennis who organised this for St M&W’s 260th year
“Are you ready yet?” – Surely a cry heard in many family homes down the years. But this week the cry comes from none other than John the Baptist – that great titanic and abrasive figure that makes his first appearance this Advent as we move to our second Sunday. John resembles the last of the Old Testament prophets – someone who continually nudges God’s people and tells them that his Kingdom is on the way
And John tells us simply that we have to repent – a very unfashionable word for our times. In our age so many people believe that no-one should dare to criticise or comment on the way that they live. But John’s message is imply one that says that “where we are” is not where we should be:- in God’s time things have to change – and we must be ready for his Kingdom when it comes
