CONFIRMATION Bishop Geoff is coming Sunday 16th  to the 10.45am Service to Confirm candidates from this Benefice. Please uphold the Candidates in your prayers and come and support them on the day

I used to dread school reports coming out: I always wondered what the Teachers would say about me – and all too often their verdict would include the sonorous phrase “could do better!” How did they know that? Could I have done? And did they think I was just lazy?

But it could be God’s verdict on the human race, couldn’t it? The standard interpretation of the Old Testament is of a people that fail to live up to God’s standards: and you might be forgiven for thinking he would soon give up on them.

This Saturday (8th) though, stands for a different viewpoint. It’s a “Lady Day” – a day on which we celebrate the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary. And if Mary stands for anything in the Bible, she stands for Humanity fulfilled: the person who says a resounding “Yes!” to all God’s purposes – and so she and Joseph become the parents of the Lord!

Too often we Anglicans carry too much baggage with us about Mary – and we become so frightened of honouring her that we are in danger of denying Gospel truth. Perhaps we are frightened of ourselves? Perhaps we cannot allow ourselves to believe that God can use frail and fallible humans in his designs? But of course he does – and the days dedicated to her in the Calendar are there to remind us of all that can happen when we allow God to work through us!

“Blessed art thou among Women” says the Archangel; with all Christians we rejoice this weekend and we are challenged to see what God can and will do among us.
