Ordinary Time

Some of you may have realised that the name “Joyce Crowther” in our intercessions is my Mother in Law. The last year has been difficult for her since Steph’s Father died in January 2019, but in recent months things became a lot worse:- frequent admissions to hospital, a severe bout of shingles and eventual admission to a Nursing Home

Sadly Joyce died on Monday last. This was fairly unexpected as she had been relatively well up to the time she died, enjoying visits from her close family. Steph and I were called early last Sunday morning and we are now in the process of organising all the details that need to be considered on these occasions

This Weekend begins “Ordinary Time” – a label much disliked by our former colleague and friend, Jane Morris. It signifies days when there is no special season e.g. Christmas, Epiphany etc. It was disliked because it doesn’t imply the riches of our time:- we live in the New Testament, where God’s love for his human family has been extravagantly shown in the birth and ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus. How could that ever be “ordinary”? Better to call all our days extraordinary – because for the Christian, that is what they are. What will God do next, for those he loves so much?

There have been some terrible years for the Rectory family, with deaths almost every year around Christmas and New Year. For Joyce and for us, what keeps us going is the firm knowledge that, behind every hurdle, there is still a blessing: and for every awful event, there is something better yet to come

God bless you all for your prayers and support in these days. May Joyce rest in peace – and Rise in Glory!
