St Saviour Aston by Stone

Today’s Gospel reading shows us the developing relationship between Jesus and Simon Peter. Jesus is teaching from Simon’s boat. He turned to Simon and instructed him about where to lower the fishing nets. Now Simon and others had been fishing all night and had not caught anything. Simon protested, claiming that such an effort would be futile. However, he lowered the nets into the deeper water as Jesus instructed. They caught so many fish that the nets had torn. Jesus had created an abundance out of scarcity. Just as he did at the wedding feast at Cana in Galilee.

Simon Peter immediately became a follower of Jesus. He called him Lord – the title given to Jesus after his Resurrection.

James and John, the sons of Zebedee were also witnesses to this event, yet Jesus words were only addressed to Simon. Jesus gave Simon a new job, telling him that he would become a different type of fisherman. He would no longer catch fish, but instead would catch people.

His task would be to bring others to Jesus. In fact, todays gospel tells us that all the fisherman with Peter left their nets and followed Jesus.
