St Michael & St Wulfad, Stone, with

St Saviour Aston by Stone

OPEN DOOR PROJECT:We have been asked by St Michaels First School to run this project again this year on Friday 20th May between 9.30am and 3.30pm. We are appealing for helpers on this day as several regular helpers are not available on this day. The children will be going on a Pilgrimage, making replica seals, learning the ropes of bellringing, writing prayers and making stained glass windows If there is a particular activity that you fancy helping with, please have a word with Margaret Moss, Dennis Abbott or Edith Leason. You do not have to commit to the whole day, any help you can give on the day will be appreciated.

The 4th Sunday of Easter is traditionallly celebrated as “Good Shepherd Sunday”, because in todays Gospel, Jesus speaks of himself as the Shepherd who is prepared to lie down his life for his sheep.

The Gospel tells us that the Good Shepherd owns his sheep and cares for them accordingly – a different prospect from the hired hand charged with taking care of the flock, since the hired man may run away to save his own life if the sheep are attacked, leaving them potentially injured or scattered. The Good Shepherd though puts his flock first rather than thinking of his own well beingand will go the extra mile to find one of his lost or injured sheep. Furthermore, the Good Shepherd knows his sheep just as they know him. There is an indefinable and comforting bond of recognition. He also speaks of those sheep who do not belong to this fold – meaning those who do not know or have not yet come to Christ. Evangelisation isa t the core of the Church’s mission so that we may all be “one flock” with “one Shepherd”. In following Jesus we are all able to give witness to the generous love of God which is given willingly through the sacrifice of his son. A sacrifice which is perpetuated in the ministry of our Bishops and ordained Priests. This Sunday is also known as Vocations Sunday and many Diocese use it as an opportunity to pray for those who might be considering ordained or religious life. It might also be a time when we are asking ourselves if god might be calling us to do some definite service for him. Today, let us remember especially Rev Jim and as he preparees for his Priesting and for Ellie as she continues her training. Pray for our Rector and for our Readers Dennis, Berwyn and Lin as they continue in their ministry.
