The Parish Churches of

St Michael & St Wulfad, Stone, with

St Saviour Aston by Stone

“Ah Vicar, I have  question for you – were Matthew and Mark Apostles or Prophets?” The phone was ringing when I was actually the Assistant Curate in Leeds – and you never quite know what you are going to get on these occasions! People ring at all times and for some funny reasons. Strictly the answer to the question was “neither – they were Evangelists” – but the lady concerned eventually joined our Adult Confirmation class

This Sunday we have some Apostles to celebrate – Ss Simon and Jude. They are some of the least known of Jesus’s initial band though – and the New Testament is absolutely silent on what happened to them after the resurrection

But ours is an Apostolic faith and an Apostolic Church. That refers to two things: firstly that we stand in the inheritance of faith that is handed down to us through the Apostles. It is not unchanging:- for example, in former times it was regarded as impossible for a Christian to charge or receive interest on any loan! That one went a long time ago. But even so, our faith is consistent with what is handed down to us

Secondly it refers to the meaning of the word: and Apostle is one who is sent. We think of St Paul on his great missionary journeys of course – but we are all a sent people. You and I are sent to our neighbours and friends, in order to bring the love of Jesus to them

So remember – God has sent you. Maybe it is to a stranger who sits in the pew next to you – maybe it is someone you speak to in the supermarket. The one thing is sure – very few of these encounters happen by chance!
