As many of you will know, my brother was a Circuit Judge. He once described to me the experience of going to a barbeque, where it was quite obvious that they were being ignored, because they weren’t part of the “in” crowd who all knew each other. Eventually one lady turned to him and said condescendingly “and what do you do?” When he replied he was “one of Her Majesty’s justices”, the woman’s expression changed and the assembled guests began to rather fawn about him!

A shallow reaction, of course – and one doesn’t have to think long before we can answer the question as to what Jesus would think of such behaviour. At the polite dinner party to which he was invited in this week’s gospel, he is dismissive of those who vie for the top places. He tells a parable which talks of sitting down in the lowest place, in the hope of promotion, rather than thinking the best place is reserved for us

Then Jesus goes a bit further. He says that we should throw parties, not for those who can repay us, but especially for those who can’t! I confess this challenges me:- not that we throw many dinner parties; but how many times do we do things in expectation that people will treat us similarly? All this reminds me of a poem that one of our congregation put in the magazine some years ago:

I dreamed death came the other night

And Heaven’s gate swung wide.

With kindly grace an angel ushered me inside.

And there to my astonishment,

Stood folk I’d known on earth.

Some I judged and labelled as unfit—

Or of little worth.

Indignant words rose to my lips,

But never were set free.

For every face showed some surprise

No one expected me!
