In todays Gospel the disciples are back in Galilee, returning to fishing. When Simon Peter, still in the role of leader, announces he is going fishing, the other Disciples follow. They spent an unsuccesful night fishing. Jesus called to the disciples from the shore but they did not recognise him immediately.Still, they followed the strangers instructions and brought in a large haul of fish. At this point, one of the disciples (the disciple who Jesus loved) realised that Jesus was appearing to them. Simon Peter, leading the way, jumped from the boatand swam to shore; the other disciples following in the boat dragging the fish. On the shore, they saw that Jesus had already prepared bread and fish on a charcoal fire. He instructed the disciples to bring their catch of fish as well. Jesus was the host at the meal that followed, feeding the disciples the bread and fish.We see allusions to the miracle of the five loaves and fishes as told in John 6.

In the Eucharist, we too are fed by Jesus in the Bread and Wine that have become his body and blood. The gifts we bring to the altar are made from gifts that God  gave first to us – grain and grape, the fruits of the earth. He has no need for anything else, He accepts the gifts we bring and transforms them into the gift of his very presence.

After the meal, Jesus directed himself to Simon Peter. This dialogue with Simon Peter is a reversal of Peters 3 denials. Petwer was forgiven. Simon Peter was then sent on a mission – Feed my Lambs, Tend my Sheep, Feed my Sheep. These commands indicate Peter is to be as Jesus, even unto sacrificing for the flock. As Jesus fed Peter at this meal and feeds us at the Eucharist, so he also sends us out to followhim, asking that we offer our lives in service and sacrifice. Nichola.
