The Parish Churches of

St Michael & St Wulfad, Stone, with

St Saviour Aston by Stone

It’s over 38 years since I was Confirmed at the age of 16. Confirmation is a very ancient rite of course – and you can see its beginnings even in New Testament times. The Apostles baptise and then lay their hands on people, invoking the Holy Spirit: and on Sunday we shall see Bishop Geoff do exactly the same thing in St Michael & St Wulfad’s

But it’s always a case of “beware of what you wish for!” When St Paul had Ananias lay hands upon him after the Damascus road experience, it was just the start: After a long period (at least two years) of prayer and learning he became the “Apostle to the Gentiles” as we all know – and his Missionary journeys are almost legendary, culminating in his trip to Rome and the Emperor

And it’s still the same! During the years of my own Ministry, it has been a privilege to see how Confirmation has been a pivotal moment in people’s lives: the gentleman in Lincolnshire who told me that he was intending being an “Occasional church-goer” after Confirmation – yet became a pillar of the place, after Confirmation: the lady who found herself turned around after her daughter’s death and her own Confirmation: the people in our own Churches who have simply found an excitement and a vision in life that they never thought they would have. These folks have met with the risen Lord on their own “Damascus Road” and with them we rejoice!

Within 2 years of my own Confirmation I found myself in front of Bishops and DDOs on the long journey to Holy Orders! What will God do with our newly Confirmed? We pray for them today
